On the Art of Complaining

Okay everyone, as you know, I have recently taken on the role of editor for Closer to God, a daily Bible reading aid. It feels like a huge responsibility, but is also a massive privilege. I get to find and recruit writers who I think will be interesting and inspiring and help all of us engage the Bible. I get to work with the material that is sent in and spend hours with my head deep in the pages of God's word. I get to play with sentence structure and pummel arguments into a logical flow and chisel a good image into a fine one. All this is SO good.
This week the first edition with me as editor arrived through the mailboxes of our regular subscribers. And I have been receiving mail about it ever since. Specifically, complaints about the size of the font. It is a valid criticism, and we are working on improvements while recognising that there has been a major change, and not all of us (including me) are very good with change.
What I wanted to say was that I have been a bit taken aback by the tone of some of these messages. Email is an impersonal medium, but a person is on the receiving end. I think there is always a place for kindness, gentleness, politeness, encouragement- even when conveying criticism. We all need to remember the power of our words to impact other people.
There is a huge amount to celebrate about the New Closer. I for one am really excited by the direction it has taken (which was not anything to do with me, so can't take credit or blame). I love the potential for creativity and freedom that the format gives our writers, I love the space for jotting down thoughts and doodles, I love the unpredictability of the layout. If you have anything lovely to say to encourage those of us who have prayed and sweated and poured out our best to make this a helpful resource then please get in touch. It would make our day :)

~ February 27th, 2012 ~ 13:02First of all, Jo, welcome to Closer with God which I have been reading avidly for many years. I always find it thought provoking and challenging. Unfortunately, for me as a 76 year old who likes to do my morning devotions early in bed before rising I find the font far too small and the type too pale. I feel that altho' the book is larger, there is much wasted space on each page, approx 1/3 is margin. Therefore the font has suffered and I have no idea why the type cannot be bolder. I would be most reluctant to change to other readings as I have tried them, but feel C.T. God is the most challenging for my Spiritual journey. Sorry some comments have appeared harsh, email is not as gentle as 'phone or writing a letter. I am sure they were not meant to hurt. Bless you in your ministry. Miriam, sister in Christ.

Many thanks for the new edition of Closer to God which arrived a week or two ago. Well done for taking on the editorship - can't be easy trying to co-ordinate everyone's contributions!
I like the new layout but have to agree with Miriam Gudgeon. The typeface is just too small for older people like me to read (even with my glasses!) so please can you expand it to fit the generous space you now have available. I really like reading about the contributors but find it impossible to do so in the current font.
I love reading Closer to God first thing in the morning before my day gets going and would be very sad to have to change to another publication simply because I can no longer read yours.

You have both exemplified the way I think criticism is delivered at its best- kindly, constructively and clearly- thank you! I have made sure that your comments have gone to the right people, but I'm afraid I don't have a whole lot of influence over anything except content, so I can't make any promises. I am really sorry that you have had trouble reading it, and I hope that future issues will be easier on your eyes.
Just out of interest, do you use a large print Bible? The size of the new Closer font isn't any smaller than regular Bible print...

People basically didn't trust us, and they were so way off the mark in their response, it really hit my courage around change the next time around, so I pray you will be able to walk through this one with God. People are often more bold about expressing fears on other people's behalf, or claiming it as such, and they seem to take their self-control off. Praying for a spirit of gentleness to abound, especially when we face change.

~ April 5th, 2012 ~ 09:04Sorry Jo, but I, too, find the font not only too small, but too faint, which I think is more of a problem. It seems that the font has reduced in direct proportion, as the size of the publication has increased! The bulk of the new booklet now makes it too big to keep in my Bible. I know these are things which are beyond your control, but they do reflect on the content. I hope that these teething troubles can be sorted out so that I can continue to enjoy reading Closer to God - which has been my regular study guide for many years. God bless you. Maureen

Ever since C T God started I have been encouraged and challenged by the contents. I am sometimes able to use a thought as a theme for homegroup too. Like other 'older' readers however, I am now struggling to read it in my favourite place and time as the light is not good enough. Also the extra space provided is no use to me as my notes go out to Kenya after I have read them to be reused. Darker or larger would help.I seem to remember Daily Bread being done in two sizes, Is that a possibility? Like other readers I am reluctant to change but we all find our best time and place to meet God and currently it's not working. I am now regretting not writing to thank you before for the valuable resource you produce,sorry. God bless you.

I'm sorry to add negative comment, and am aware that many people will have worked hard on CTG, but am glad to find I'm not the only one who cannot read it (too faint and too small), finds the book too big and much waste of paper! I have tried to adapt to the change in style but am really not getting on with it, there doesn't seem to be much to 'get my teeth into,' I already keep notes elsewhere and think I will be cancelling my subscription. However I wish you well with your editorship and hope things settle down! With regard to your courgette plant, have you tried planting on top of a mound which has a hollow outside it into which you water, so the stem of the plant stays dry?

I am getting on fine with the content of the new Closer. I always liked the format and content of the old Closer, but appreciate the way the new Closer allows the reader space to engage with the Bible passage. I have been writing my own prayers and responses to the daily reading. So thank you. :)
I would echo other people's comments about the font. I just turned 50 and my eyesight has changed a lot (not for the better). The font is way too faint and small, much smaller than any of the Bible versions I use. I am sorry to hear that some criticism has been less than polite, but glad to know that SU are working on the font!
